A group of North Eastern pastoralists stormed a devolution meeting at Katumba area on the Mwingi-Garissa highway, forcing their way to the dais in protest of a decision to 'extend' regional borders.
The herders were apparently infuriated by the presence of Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, who is alleged to have struck deals with the Kitui County administration to extend the border, thus displacing them.
Governor Abdullahi tried in vain to calm the rising tension in his Somali dialect, but the herders could not hear anything, prompting him to swiftly hand over the meeting to Governor Malombe.
For the last two months, there has been rising tension between Garissa herders and the locals over diminishing water and pasture.
During the devolution torch meeting, Malombe lauded the devolution caravans, which he said would enable the people across all the 47 counties to appreciate the fruits of devolution.
He disclosed that governors will unite in the run up to the 2017 elections with intention of ensuring that peaceful elections are held without any visible conflict since the electioneering process is an important national exercise that ought to be handled diligently.
