The national government is on the spot after leaders from Kisii County demanded to know why funds set aside to mitigate El Nino effects have not reached the devolved units.
Kisii Governor James Ongwae is among leaders seeking answers from the central government which is yet to release the disaster mitigation funds as earlier promised.
Speaking at a Kisii hotel on Tuesday, the county boss said the situation had forced his government to take emergency steps in a bid to save lives and property following the onset of the El Nino rains.
“We would like the national government to ensure that the monies set aside for El Nino are released so that they can help mitigate effects of the heavy rains,” he added.
Pressure is also mounting on the national government after MPs from the region started accusing it of turning the El Nino disaster mitigation programme into a public relations gimmick.
Nyaribari Chache MP Richard Tong’i claimed attempts to follow up on the matter with the relevant departments including ministries of Internal Security and the Treasury hit a snag after he was informed that no such funds had been factored in the budget.
