Kitui Governor Julius Malombe has been tasked to explain why his government used revenue collected at the source instead of banking the same in the county revenue fund as stipulated by law.
Appearing before the Senate on Thursday, Malombe struggled explaining when senators demanded to know why two cheques amounting to Sh579 245 could not be explained.
“The funds were factored in the 2012/2013 defunct local authorities’ account but were cashed through Sh307 420 and Sh271 825 awaiting approval by the county assembly,” the governor stated.
The Senate Public Accounts and Investment Committee is set to pull the governor through more vetting later on this week to probe into 2013/2014 audit queries with Senator David Musila demanding that the governor produce expenditure schedule or prove to the senate that there indeed was misappropriation of funds.
Musila is also one of the aspirants seeking to oust the incumbent Malombe and thus the grilling is set to be just a battle field with each seeking to out do the other.
