Speaking in his office on Monday, the governor has directed the families affected to report to the county secretary to get the assistance he has pledged.

“I would like to express my deepest sympathies and condolences to the family, friends and relatives of those who lost their lives in the heinous attack on the Nairobi-bound bus that led to the macabre killing of innocent Kenyans," said Ongwae.

"Eight of the victims hail from Kisii County. I have directed my office to urgently identify the affected families because we shall help in burial arrangements. I ask the affected families to contact the County Secretary or the Chief Officer Administration” added Ongwae.

Those who were caught by the jaws of the armed militia are majorly teachers who had just closed schools and were travelling home for the holidays.

According to reports on Saturday, alleged Al-shabaab hijacked a Nairobi-bound bus and executed 28 people in a chilling dawn attack at Arabiya in Mandera near the Kenya-Somali border.

The government has since said they are in pursuit of the assailants, who are believed to be from Somali.
