Garissa Governor Ali Korane has said that his administration will initiate and fund several irrigation projects aimed at transforming farming and enhancing food security in the county.
Mr Korane said that climate change, unreliable and poor rains being experienced in the region has led to the area’s food security being under threat.
Mr Korane said that the county government will begin supplying irrigation equipment to small-scale farmers across the county so as to curb the effects of the drought.
Speaking at Garissa Primary School playground, the governor-elect said that his administration will establish robust programmes to ensure food security.
“We aim to establish a firm foundation for food security and nutrition by undertaking robust programmes that will see over 2.3m acres of arable land put under irrigation in partnership with local and international investors.”
“We will prioritize support to farmers and provide them with farm inputs and access to market for their produce. We also aim to establish more livestock abattoirs and livestock treatment centres, build cold storage facilities for the preservation of both livestock and farm produce,” he added.
Some pastoralists in the region ventured into cultivation after they lost almost all their livestock to the ravaging drought.
