Residents of areas hit by drought have reasons to smile after Garissa Governor Ali Korane on Saturday launched a water trucking and animal feeding programme.

According to a local daily, Korane's move comes a time when different areas in the county are experiencing drought following poor rains.

The new project will benefit residents of different parts including Dadaab Lagdera, Balambala, Ijara and Fafi sub counties among other affected areas.

The county boss also said that his committed to improving the welfare of the residents of the region following his election.

The county government is working in collaboration with the national government to mitigate drought among other natural disasters affecting the area. Korane said that the hostile climatic conditions have made life unbearable for most of the residents, forcing some of them to migrate in search of greener pastures.

He was speaking where he flagged off the distribution of livestock feed to various areas of the county. The  Programme has received funding from the European Union, through the National Drought Management Authority.

In the past, residents have been lamenting over persistent drought in the region with little effort from the government to change the situation.
