In a bid to encourage locals to concentrate on few dairy farming in Mandera, the Governor Ali Korane visited the dairy farm located at Bulla Haji village along the Daua River.

The Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries set up a demonstration farm in August 2015 to showcase the viability of dairy farming in Mandera.

The farm sits on 18-acre land along the Daua River at Bulla Haji village.

According to the county boss, the department procured 12 freshian cows, out of which seven were in calves and pregnant, for distribution to farmers along the Daua River, in order to improve the local breeds.

The calves gave birth to 7 calves.

He noted that this is the first generation which all is pure freshian breed and the second time a cross breed with a Sahiwal bull led to the birth of 10 more calves.

The farm according to the Governor now has a total of 28 cows.

“The dairy farm is equipped with all the required facilities. Milk production per animal is 10 litres per day which is fed to the calves,” Said the governor.

He added that the ministry has plans of selling milk to organized milk vendors.

“Owing to the high demand for fresh milk, the ministry has plans of selling the milk to organized milk vendors with the already existing ATM milk machine donated by County Government to a milk cooperative society at the Mandera Milk Market,” He said.

He hinted that tens of farmers and various and various institutions have so far trained in the farm and witnessed the viability of dairy farming in their county.

He noted that their main aim is to encourage Mandera to take up dairy farming as a profitable venture.
