Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has assured residents in areas that have been affected by the ongoing heavy rains of quick intervention using the funds that had been set aside for El Nino mitigation last year.

While responding to concerns raised by a section of residents from various parts in the county over flooding in Gilgil on Wednesday, Mbugua said the county government will use the monies it has allocated for El Nino mitigation to address the situation.

“We will use the money we had set aside for El Nino mitigation; it is not enough because it was Sh12 million meaning every sub-county would get about Sh1 million but we will increase the money in our Supplementary Budget this year to a reasonable amount,” he said.

He added that the county government did not use the money as there was no emergency but the heavy rains this season have caused considerable damage on roads which have to be repaired.

On Tuesday, during a tree planting exercise at Mwariki Primary in Rhonda Estate, residents lamented the bad condition of the area as rain water has stagnated since the drainage systems have been blocked or are not there at all.

Emma Kamau, a resident of Rhonda said: “The county needs to move with speed and do things right because the El Nino came and went and now the rains have caused a mess here. We want to have water flowing freely and not such flooding.”

She is among several other people from the area who have been forced to seek shelter elsewhere after their houses were marooned with water.
