Private garbage collection companies in Eldoret town and other urban centres in Uasin Gishu County have been asked to ensure they dump the waste they collect at designated areas.
Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago warned that any private garbage collection company that will be found dumping waste at undesignated areas will face the full force of the law.
"We want to discourage reckless dumping of waste in this county and before we take legal actions we are asking companies that engage in the collection of waste to be responsible enough and do their work as it's expected of them," said Mandago.
Speaking in Eldoret on Thursday during a three-day workshop for solid waste management facilitated by a Swedish firm, Norrkoping Water and Waste Company, the Governor promised to ensure all resolutions that will be reached at during the workshop are fully implemented.
"We need to pull resources together as stakeholders so that we make this town cleaner and reclaim its lost glory," said Mandago.
The county boss expressed optimism that the county’s plans to set up a solid waste factory that will generate power will be rolled out sooner.
"We are looking forward to actualizing the solid management waste plant which will be the first one in East and Central Africa converting waste into power,” said Mandago.
The Swedish firm is expected to start construction of the Uasin Gishu waste management project at Kipkaren dump site before the end of next year.
