Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) have been warned against using the plight of forest dwellers for personal financial gains.

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos has issued the warning while claiming that some NGOs were using the Sengwer community in the county to solicit for money from international donors.

The community has been fighting the government's efforts to move them away from Embobut forest which they say is their ancestral land.

Speaking in Eldoret town on Monday, Tolgos lamented that the NGOs even after getting the funding never help the communities in question.

The governor said his administration would not entertain such non-governments organizations which he said are run by individuals who are not residents of Elgeyo Marakwet county.

"There are people who are being used by they don't benefit anything while a few individuals sitting in hotels get a lot of money out of other's plight," Tolgos said.

"As a county, I believe we've enough activists and human rights defenders who can do better than the NGOs using our communities for personal gain," he added.
