The governor says that though the ban will have negative implication in terms of employment, the good outcome will be felt later.
In an interview with the Standard, the Wiper governor said that use of plastic bags is to blame for global warming and other hazardous environmental effects being felt across the globe.
The newly elected Wiper governor said that his government will work with the national government to ensure that ban is enforced.
The ex-journalist, however, said that his administration will engage with the national government to create alternative employment to locals who have been depending on plastic bags sale for survival.
“We are in talks with stakeholders to see how we will help our people who have been selling plastic bags to ensure that they do not suffer as a result of the ban,” he said as quoted by the Standard.
Samboja said that part of his government measures is to revive the sisal industry. He said that sisal bags are environmentally friendly and will be a good replacement for plastic bags.
The Wiper governor urged companies that have been producing plastic bags to think of alternative investments.He said that government will work to ensure environmental friendly policies are passed and implemented.
The ban on plastic bags took effect on Monday with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) saying it will be enforced fully.
The environmental agency says that it has deployed enforcement officers across the country to ensure the ban is adhered to.
