Privatization of the sugar industry and failure to bridge the 2000 metric tonnes of sugar gap is to blame for the presence of contraband sugar in the country, leaders from the Lake region economic bloc have said.
Led by Governors Peter Anyang Nyong’o of Kisumu County and Stephen Sang of Nandi, the leaders said unscrupulous traders have taken advantage of the development to smuggle sugar in the country.
Speaking in Nakuru, the leaders urged the government to empower sugarcane farmers. This, they said, will see the sugar gap bridged.
They lauded the government over its war on contraband goods saying local sugarcane farmers should enjoy fruits of the trade.
Nyong'o and Sang were in Nakuru for a peace forum over Kisumu-Nandi border conflict.
