A section of Gatundu North residents have slammed the devolution conference saying it is a waste of taxpayers’ money.
The residents say devolution has been a mere waste of public funds instead of devolving services to the common mwananchi. According to Kamwangi Town traders whose market has never been renovated since devolution became functional, more funds should be given to MPs for rural development.
They have criticised county administrations for registering the highest levels of graft cases in the country citing that the initial system of administration was better.
“We have no taste of devolution and live in struggles especially during the rain seasons. We have been asking Kabogos’ leadership to intervene because we pay our levies but nothing has been done so far. Governors are meeting in Meru to enjoy, lie to Kenyans on what they’ve done but Wanjiku is facing more challenges than before,” said Anthony Kaguthi, Kamwangi Market secretary.
“Governors, MCAs should not meet to lie, they have done nothing. The national government should equip and fund MPs more than counties where health and commercial activities are paralysed by rogue county leaders. There have been many strikes by county workers. We should re-think the devolution thing which to me has brought shame than hope to the common people,” said Agnes Wangari.
The conference is themed ‘The Promise of Devolution: Consolidating the Gains after Transition and Looking into the Future’.
