The Council of Governors has called for the disbandment of Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA).
Speaking when they appeared before the National Assembly's Transport Committee on Tuesday, the county chiefs, represented by Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong and his Nyandarua counterpart Francis Kimemia, urged the lawmakers to abolish the two bodies in line with the constitution.
The duo who cited duplication of responsibilities said with the sector having been devolved, the authorities are stripping counties of their deserved resources, as they are still receiving the funds meant for the counties.
The governors pointed out that the same had led to slowed down development in transport sector due to limited resources.
''The two bodies are stripping us of our resources, counties budgets should be increased and allocated funds based on their needs. Otherwise, giving us small amounts and expecting us to manage all our needs with it is impossible,'' Ojaamong said.
His remarks were seconded by Kimemia who said the request, if granted, will be a big boost to the lower governments.
''With good governance, after breaking the bodies, it will be possible to achieve more for our counties. Our main aim is to enhance service delivery and professionalism,'' said Kimemia.
