Governors have agreed to pay doctors for the 100 days they were on strike.

Outgoing Council of Governors chairman Peter Munya said on Monday that the resolution was reached on humanitarian grounds.

"But they need to understand that dialogue is more effective than resorting to industrial action," he said in his State of Devolution address on Monday.

Munya also outlined steps taken to improve service delivery in the sector.

The Meru governor said counties have continuously invested in sector by setting up new facilities and providing medicine and equipment.

Munya said they have also ensured health facilities have enough personnel.

"There are 4,080 doctors at county facilities and 557 others at national referral facilities," he noted. "We have put strategies to ensure better working conditions for health workers. This includes allocating over 21 per cent of the budget to health services."

Governors had refused to pay doctors for the strike days after which the practitioners threatened industrial action. They argued that counties were facing challenges caused by cash hurdles.

Meanwhile, Turkana Governor Josephat Nanok has been elected the new CoG chairman, to replace Meru's Munya.

During the elections held Monday, Taita-Taveta Governor John Mruttu was re-elected CoG vice-chairman.
