A number of Governors in the North Eastern region have railed against Raila Odinga's proposal made during a devolution conference in Kakamega to introduce a third tier of government.

The proposition has not sat well with the county bosses who contend that its adoption will spell doom for devolution.

Leading the charge of that opposition is Mandera's Governor Ali Roba who bemoaned the prospects of Mandera residents having to commute to Garissa to get their services.

''Odinga's proposals are not practical for North Eastern region. We are just starting to enjoy the benefits of devolution and somebody wants that taken away from us. That is something that we cannot and we will not accept,'' the governor said.

The governor spoke Thursday, adding his voice to the third-tier government debate that has consumed the political discourse.

Raila's proposal will necessitate a constitutional amendment that scores of Kenyans contend will cost billions of shillings.

Other governors in the region have also voiced their opposition to the idea including Marsabit's Mohamud Ali and Wajir's Abdi Mohammed who has been grappling with the prospect of nullification of his gubernatorial victory in the 2017 election.

The Deputy President William Ruto also warned against embracing Odinga's proposals, saying that devolution should be done downwards and not upwards.
