Auditor-General Edward Ouko [Photo/Citizen TV]Auditor-General Edward Ouko has accused governors of spending taxpayers money on 'white elephant projects'.
This follows a report for the 2015-16 financial year where Ouko criticized governors for suspending projects after investing in millions of shillings.
He highlighted how Kakamega County under Governor Wycliffe Oparanya abandoned several projects thus blowing taxpayers money.
"Projects worth Sh55 million either stalled or were abandoned whereas 90 per cent of project costs amounting to Sh50 million had already been disbursed by the County Executive for these projects," Ouko said as reported by The Star.
Former Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua's administration was also accused of wasting Sh23 million of Sh34 million for a construction of Nasha Market sheds project which was also suspended.
"Physical verification revealed the project is incomplete and had stalled. No explanation or approvals were provided for these structural alteration. It is likely that the contractor may lack the capacity to undertake a contract of this magnitude," he added.
The two counties failed to account for large sums of taxpayer money spent on different activities.
