The proposal by President Uhuru Kenyatta that a joint committee be formed to discuss the IEBC impasse has received backing from the Council of Governors (CoG).
The Council’s chaiman Peter Munya said the move is a good window of opportunity and a first step in the right direction.
“His Excellency the President’s announcement on the formation of a Joint Select Committee to resolve the impasse over the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is a welcome development in the face of increased tensions around the country as well the tragic loss of lives in the midst of public protests,” said the Meru Governor.
Munya said the dialogue will ensure a free and fair general election in 2017.
“This is a good window of opportunity and a first step in the right direction. We are aware that other steps will follow to guarantee a free and fair election that is acceptable to all,” he said.
The governor also noted that the Supreme Court crisis requires urgent resolution to enable it to take its rightful place as a dispute resolution mechanism in the electoral process.
He said the two-third constitutional principle must also be operationalised, as a failure to do so may occasion a constitutional crisis at the heart of preparing for the 2017 elections.
