Governor John Nyagarama’s wife Naomi Nyagarama, who is spearheading the project said in the second phase, another seven million trees will be planted by July, with the trees being given to women, men and school children.

Speaking at Konate, where she gave gravelia tree seedlings, Mrs Nyagarama said the trees will be a source of firewood to mothers and generate income to families.

She asked parents to give land to the youth to plant more trees and make money out of it.

"Please parents give our youths pieces of land for them to plant this trees, by the time they will be old, they will not be poor and become beggars," she said.

She added that there has been a scramble for the bamboo and gravelia seedlings, an indication that residents are beginning to embrace the species.
