Factories that manufacture bread have been given six more months to ensure that they stop using plastic bags to package their products.
The grace period was given by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) as part of its strategy of completely ridding the country of plastic carrier bags.
A civil rights group had accused the authority of selectively implementing the ban by unfairly allowing some companies to continue making use of plastic bags and the grace period is seen as a response to the accusation.
Speaking on the sidelines of a summit on environmental protection at the United Nation Environmental Programme headquarters, Nema Director General Geoffrey Wahungu said the country had made significant strides in dealing with the plastic bags menace.
