An elderly woman from Murata village, Makwa in Gatundu North is fighting for her life in hospital after her son allegedly attacked her with a knife.
The 73-year-old granny, Magdalene Mumbi is alleged to have been caught off guard as she tethered her goats within the homestead shortly before midday on Saturday morning.
An eye witness said the suspect, police identified as Titus Mbugua, without any provocation, crept behind his unsuspecting mother and started slashing her with the sharp weapon several times before she fell down unconscious.
‘The two have been living in peace; in fact we are all surprised. We suspect he was high on drugs which could have triggered him to committing the crime,’ said Noel Waitara, a neighbour.
The neighbour who was still in shock narrated how the suspect then picked up the three fingers he had chopped off and walked away as neighbours rushed to the bloody scene to answer the woman’s distress call.
Mbugua, however, escaped the wrath of the irate residents by a whisker who were baying for his blood.
He managed to run into the compound of a nearby Makwa police post where he was immediately arrested and locked in.
The enraged residents later vented their anger on his house which they set on fire and also slashed his banana plantation.
The mother who was in bad state was rushed to the Igegania Level Four Hospital where she is admitted in critical condition.
Makwa police boss Jeremiah Waiganjo said investigations have been launched to establish the reason behind the attack.
