Soon, there will be no grass thatched houses in Machakos County, if Governor Alfred Mutua’s 2017-2022 Manifesto is anything to go by. Machakos County is following on the footsteps of Rwanda and Singapore.
According to the manifesto which is available for the public at www.machakosgovernment.com, Mutua is planning to increase the standard of living of Machakos County residents through his housing project.
The housing project is veered towards eradicating grass thatched houses completely. This will be executed through providing free mabati for the existing grass thatched houses. Coming at a time when Machakos County is experiencing the worst water crisis, mabati roof might just be the solution to the water problem, at least during rainy season.
Harvesting of rain water will really help the residents of Machakos County not only in getting water for drinking and irrigation but it will also save them a lot of money as rain water is free.
The governor who is serving his last term is keen on leaving a lasting legacy. If this housing project will succeed, then he will have left a permanent mark in the heart of Machakos residents as shelter is a basic need.
