Travellers have raised their concerns over how 14-seater matatus plying the Kangundo-Nairobi route are being driven.
The commuters say that the matatus are being driven carelessly and at high speeds.
Speaking to Philomena Kyalo, a business lady at Tala Market, she claimed that she uses these matatus to fetch green groceries from Marikiti Market in Nairobi and transport them to Tala on a daily basis and that they are driven at high speeds leaving many passengers frightened.
“These Nissans are driven by people who we can call them crazy, most of them drive at a speed higher than 80 km/h that I am sure of."
Philomena further added that most of these matatu's don't have speed governors and whenever passengers complain to the driver or conductor, they are met with rude responses and insults.
“I believe that most of them have tampered with the speed governors because of the speed they are driven. What surprises many is that whenever you ask the driver to reduce the speed most of them just assume they didn't hear you or turn to you with rude responses or insults."
Speaking to one of the drivers who sought anonymity, he explained that there is pressure from matatu owners to deliver a certain amount of money and also from matatu saccos forcing them to tamper with the speed governors to make as many trips as possible.
"It's not our fault. We are forced by circumstances. That's why most of us have tampered with the speed governors so that we don't lose our jobs."
However efforts to talk to the chairpersons managing the two main saccos operating within the Kangundo-Nairobi highway to comment on this issue bore no fruits as they were not receiving calls.
