Traders said that the problem has been fuelled by the on going drought in the country.

Speaking to our reporter on Friday afternoon at the market, traders said the prices of vegetables and fruits have shot due to low supply of the produce.

They said their lives have become more difficult as clients avoid the market due to price skyrocket.

Martine Mwale, a grocery in the market said the prices of greens have shot up and it is now beyond the reach by many of their buyers, adding that even the prices of meat are low compared to vegetables.

“The price of vegetables has gone high, and its now beyond the reach of many. I am so surprised that the price of vegetables has overtaken that of meat and fish,” said Mwale.

Monicah Awiti, a fish trader said she is now selling more fish than any other time, as many people prefer fish due to the low price compared to that of vegetables.

She said the prolonged drought has highly contributed to the low supply leading to high prices.

“I am now selling more fish than ever since people have realized that the fish price is low compared by that of vegetables,” said Awiti.
