Residents of Ngengi village in Kwa Vonza location on Saturday woke to shocking news after a 27-year-old woman poisoned her two children to death before committing suicide on Friday night.
The woman, identified as Jennifer Kanini, allegedly gave her daughter Monicah Musyoka and son Munyao Musyoka aged 7 and 3 years respectively an unknown deadly chemical before taking it thereby killing herself.
Their lifeless bodies were discovered on Saturday by neighbours who consequently reported the tragic incident to the authorities.
Kitui County AP Commander Benson Wasike confirmed the deaths but said the police were unable to establish the woman’s motive in their preliminary investigations as she left no suicide note behind.
However, the AP Boss indicated that in-depth investigations were ongoing to ascertain the circumstances leading to the multiple deaths.
Mr Wasike said the woman’s husband Musyoka Munyao was away at work in Nairobi as death struck his family.
Shocked neighbours who sought anonymity said the deceased always seemed a happy mother and wife. They said they could not understand what led her to kill her own children before taking her own life.
The bodies were taken to Kitui County Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination and preservation.
