Lobby group Angaza Empowerment Network whose purported director petitioned for the removal of Supreme Court judges has now distanced itself from the appeal.
Derrick Ngumu petitioned the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Monday to dismiss Justice Isaac Lenaola and Deputy Chief Justice Phenomena Mwilu over judicial misconduct.
He appealed to have the ruling overturned.
However, it has now emerged that Ngumu is not the group's executive director as purported but the chairman.
Four of Angaza's five directors further said they did not instruct Ngumu to file the petition.
According to Executive director Livingstone Nyando, a decision of such magnitude to be reached requires a board meeting organised and a majority decision upheld.
"In this case, at least three of the directors must admit to the proposal before ratification. No board meeting was held," he said.
"[We] are an independent non-partisan organisation and do not support either side of the political divide," he said.
