A lobby group in Kibera has vowed to mobilise the area residents to stop remitting taxes to the county government of Nairobi until it collects heaps of garbage in the area.

Nubian Rights Forum (NRF) chairman, Shafi Hussein said the group will in the next two weeks mobilise business people to boycott paying taxes if the county government fails to take action. Briefing the press today in Kibera, Hussein said the county government has an obligation to ensure that citizens acquire essential services that concern their health.

''As the community awaits the National Youth Service (NYS) cleaning programme to be reinstated, the Nairobi county government needs to offer garbage collection services to the residents of Kibera as they pay tax to the county government,'' he noted.

He said like any other tax payer, Kibera residents had a right to demand for such services. The NRF chairman said residents risked acquiring dangerous diseases like cholera and typhoid as a result of the stinking garbage. He said the withdrawal of NYS services in the area has also contributed to the increase in crime.
