Siaya County Governor Cornel Rasanga is urging farmers to embrace cotton farming in readiness for an Indian investor who is due to set up base in the county. Rasanga, who briefed the press in Kisumu upon his arrival from India where he had accompanied former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, said cotton farming in Siaya is viable and needs to be revived. He said cotton used to be the cash crop in Siaya until some structures collapsed. “Cotton used to do well here and I am working with some investors to come and revive Ndere ginnery,” he said. He said the ginnery was being run before collapse by Indians. The governor said he has put up a strong appeal to investors from India to take the advantage and revive the ginnery. He said the revival of cotton farming in the county will boost the economy of the county, leading to income generation. “Our people are sitting on money and I want to tell farmers to grab this opportunity and grow cotton,” he said. Rasanga appealed to farmers in cotton-growing areas to start growing cotton during the long rains this year and not wait until the investor arrives.
