Former senior chief Peter Somoni, on Monday said Kisii region is a fertile place but residents have not practiced farming fully as recommended.

“Farmers should embrace mixed cropping and adopt growing crops which are drought resistant to boost yields. Modern methods of farming should guide the farmers in their farming activities across the Gusii region,” he said.

Somoni urged the government to provide affordable subsidized fertilizers to farmers for usage during planting.

“The government should also help farmers get affordable subsidized fertilizers which will be used during planting. Brokers who are exploiting fertilizer prices should be arrested and prosecuted for exploiting farmers,” Somoni said.

He challenged farmers not to sell their produce at throw away prices.

"I am appealing to farmers to avoid selling their produce at throw away prices since this may lead to hunger. Growers should take care of their produce to sustain them at all times to avoid the struggle when there is food shortage,” he added.
