For those who had the privilege of being brought up in the slums of Kibera back in the 80s and 90, you will understand what this story is all about.

There was a lot of poverty among the people who lived in Kibera those days. Apart from slums being very dirty with litter and wastes all over, the slum also had poor housing facilities unlike these days the environment in the slums is clean and good houses have been built.

Kibera slums lacked good latrines when it rained and human waste flooded the ground and stepping on such grounds was terrible. The flooding waters even entered the poorly constructed houses. By then residents had sleepless nights.

People who lived in the slums in the 80s and 90s were believed to be the poorest in society who could not afford to rent houses at the neighboring slums of Kangemi, Kawangware and Uthiru because the standards of living was very deplorable in the slum. People slept in open houses and when it rained, it was horrible.

But these days, people living in the slums of Kibera have every reason to smile simply because life in Kibera has changed, it is not like before. Good houses have been built, proper latrines, the environment is clean, unlike before.

Many people are now moving up and down the slums of Kibera looking for rental houses since the houses are cheap. One can get a well-constructed stone house in Kibera from sh2500 - sh3500 and sh900 - sh2000 for a mabati constructed room with good toilets and plenty of water unlike before when there was no water, poor sanitation and poorly constructed which cost sh500.

The luckiest generation mostly referred to as the Digital generation, are enjoying the good life in the slum of Kibera.

It is good to remember the old days we lived in.....
