An aspirant for Nyamira Gubernatorial seat has opened up about his life from a humble background to a leading entrepreneur and a World Bank consultant.
Charles Mochama currently runs two leading primary schools in the country (Imperial Academy and Set Green Hill), Real estates across the country and has an interest in several commercial banks as a shareholder, an investment which is approximated to be worth Sh300 million.
In Tuesday’s interview, Mochama 46-years-old, attributed his success in entrepreneurship to determination and endurance, citing honesty as the key component to his fairy tale.
“I was born to poor parents who could not afford my school fee at Kemera ward but they valued education so much," said Mochama.
"They worked hard to educate me and I am happy that I passed well my studies,” he added.
“As much as I had a strong educational background, I always aspired to be an entrepreneur," said Mochama.
"I was always focused and determined to get there. I believe my endurance and honesty has repaid me because of who I am today,” he added.
According to Mochama, the country is facing serious unemployment rates among the youths due to a poor education system and blames youths of being unable to think innovatively, by coming up with new ideas that could be supported to implement opportunities.
“Honestly, I think our education system is focused more on teaching our children on how to get white collar jobs which are limited," said Mochama.
"This is where we have failed as a nation and something has to be done urgently,” said the aspirant.
“Our youths are not being creative enough and keep on crying foul on limited employment opportunities," he said.
"It’s only a few who are ready to come up with innovations which can be supported to create employment opportunities,” he added.
Mochama also believes the youthful population could succeed in life if they focus less on politics and put more focus on coming up with ideas of venturing into agribusiness, farming and entrepreneurship.
“There is always hope if we reduce our political temperatures. Some of us started with very little income but you can see where we are," he advised.
"It’s all about getting your priorities right. There are more opportunities in agribusiness, farming and entrepreneurship and this is where we need to see more youths,” he added.
Through his success in entrepreneurship, Mochama has worked with World Bank as a special consultant in agribusiness and financial management, an experience he believes should enable him to transform the economy of Nyamira County once elected.
