Counties have experienced a fresh wave of political tussles as senators, MPs and other politicians position themselves to occupy higher offices.

This has seen several legislators roll out strategies, among them going back to school, as part of their preparations to challenge the incumbent governors in the 2017 elections.

In Mombasa, Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar and Nyali MP Hezron Awiti have vowed to challenge Governor Hassan Joho for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat come 2017.

In Kilifi County, Governor Amason Kingi faces stiff opposition from Kilifi North MP Gideon Mung'aro.

Nairobi County has not been left behind as the incumbent; Dr Evans Kidero faces an uphill task against the likes of Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, TNA chairperson Johnstone Sakaja, Miguna Miguna and Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru.

In other parts of the country like Homabay, Kisumu, Siaya and Bomet counties, the incumbents, Governors Cyprian Awiti, Jack Ranguma, Cornel Rasanga and Isaac Ruto consecutively face a host of gubernatorial aspirants in the 2017 general elections.

In Kisii, Kakamega, Murang'a, Kiambu and Kericho Counties, Governors James Ongwae, Wycliffe Oparanya, Mwangi wa Iria, William Kabogo and Prof Paul Chepkwony also face stiff competition from their opposition.

This trend clearly shows that come 2017, the gubernatorial race will be a very close and tight one as the aspirants are expected to stage a fierce battle to occupy the available seats.

The need to control billions of shillings in the county has attracted a host of people, with some governors being accused of corruption.
