The Garissa Interfaith Steering committee now wants the government to investigate circumstances under which a pistol registered under the government was recovered from a suspected member of a hit squad.
Led by area SUPKEM secretary general, Sheikh Salat, the clerics say the suspect was arrested and was on a mission to eliminate top Muslim leaders.
The suspect, who hails from Moyale, but who did not have any identification documents, was arrested by two members of the interfaith committee after a tip off from children who become suspicious of his movement in the area in Bula Komora. Upon being searched, the suspect was found with the pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition and the names of the three clerics who he was to kill.
Salat said they were eagerly waiting for a conclusive investigation on the matter noting that, at least, 5 top clerics in the area had been killed under unclear circumstances. Salat added that no person had been arrested in connection with the killings.
Meanwhile, Garissa Peace committee member, Reverend David Matolo of Redeemed Gospel, who is also a member of the committee, has urged the government to beef up security in the area to avert the continued killings of religious leaders.
The committees secretary, Hassan Shurie thanked members of the public for volunteering information on suspicious characters in their midst.
