Armed gunmen shot and wounded a man in a botched robbery in Changamwe, Mombasa County.
Confirming the incident, Changamwe police chief Stanley Cheteka said the victim, identified as Mr Gliforth Okanga, was attacked by two armed gunmen shortly after withdrawing money.
Mr Okanga who is a driver and an employee of EPZ company was attacked at industrial area as he was driving back after withdrawing employees' salaries.
The police boss said the armed men shot at the roof of the vehicle which was transporting the money with the bullet hitting the driver on the neck.
“After the driver had withdrawn the money, he was attacked at industrial area by two men who were armed. There was a traffic jam piling up after the incident,” said Cheteka.
“The suspects fired at the roof of the car near the driver’s window and the bullet hit the driver on the neck injuring him,” he added.
Mr Cheteka said the driver had put the money under the seats making it difficult for the robbers to access the money.
“After failing to get the money, the two suspects later on escaped using a motorcycle. We have launched investigations and we are pursuing the suspects,” said Cheteka, as quoted by Baraka FM.
The police boss added that the driver who was taken to Bomu Hospital for medical treatment is alleged to be transporting Sh200,000 in cash.
