Chaos erupted in Nairobi CBD moments after the swearing-in of NASA leader Raila Odinga Tuesday afternoon.
Police fired in the air and lobbed teargas canisters at civilians said to be NASA supporters in an effort to disperse people from the city centre.
The running battles controlled much of Tom Mboya Street and Moi Avenue from Haile Selassie towards Nation Centre.
"I didn't even see how it began. We were at Archives waiting for the bus home. Suddenly people started running and then there was tear gas. I don't know what happened," says Peninah Arunga, one of those caught up in the fracas.
Up to 4.30pm, police vehicles were seen patrolling the city centre that had little human traffic.
