IDPs from Kisii and Nyamira counties have threatened to boycott voting exercise come 2017 if the government can’t identify genuine IDPs and compensate them in time.
According to them, there are bogus IDPs who want to be compensated by the government leaving out the genuine ones and threatened if bogus IDPs get compensation, more than 4,000 IDPs from Gusii region are going to boycott participating in the next general election in 2017.
Addressing the press on Monday in Kisii town, Nyamira county IDPs coordinator Joseph Onduko and his Kisii counterpart Alfred Akama said the government has put aside Sh6.5 billion to compensate IDPs and threatened to boycott the election come 2017.
“We sent the genuine list of Gusii IDPs to the government, we want bogus IDPs not to get compensation and let the government compensate us in time,” said Akama.
“Other IDPs in the country were compensated Sh200,000 each and that is the exact amount we want if the amount is going to be reduced we are not going to vote in 2017,” said Onduko.
