Thousands of Gusii Institute of Technology of students from will today, Thursday vote for their preferred candidates to the student union, after an intensive two-week campaign.

Many candidates thronged into various hotels in town on the last day of campaigns, in a bid to lure electorates to vote them, while others led their supporters in the streets to dance and chant victory slogans.

Over 2000 registered voters are expected to cast their vote in an exercise that is expected to end at later in the day, followed by tallying and subsequent announcement of winners.

Chairperson of ‘Electoral Commission’ Rodgers Moseti optimistic that the annual exercise will be successful due to reduced cases of complaints.

“I hope it will be a record breaking exercise since many candidates have adhered to regulations of elections hence no one has been punished,” he said.

“The voter register has been verified by all parties therefore, we are ready for the same. We only know of a few cases of bribery but the commission is investigating the complaint,” said Moseti.

Fierce competition is expected in the race for chairperson, in which two candidates have expressed an interest, while the Senate is also expected to be a titanic battle to watch.

John Nyaanga, one of the favorite candidates for the big seat expressed his confidence in the electoral commission, besides urging students to vote in large numbers.

“We are expecting free and fair polls and we are sure the commission is ready for the same. I call upon my colleagues to come in large numbers and exercise their democratic right,” he said.
