ODM leadership in Gusii has dismissed sensational claims by Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwa that the region a tossup following tremendous achievement of Jubilee region.
Earlier this week, on a local radio, Inchugwa said President Uhuru Kenyatta was likely to beat opposition leader Raila Odinga Odinga in Kisii and Nyamira, regions that overwhelmingly voted for opposition in 2013.
Interestingly, Jubilee strategists have further identified the 700,000 vote rich region as swing with only six months to elections.
“It is clumsy for someone to claim that Gusii is a swing region. Nothing has really changed and I am seeing a worse case for Uhuru than in 2013,” said Kisii ODM chair Sam Omwando.
His Nyamira counterpart James Gesami added: “It would take a miracle for a Jubilee candidate to score significant votes from our region.”
President Uhuru Kenyatta, who slightly scored above 25 percent from the two counties, is keen to supplement this year to safeguard his presidency.
But the spirited opposition team under Mr. Odinga has often resisted government’s effort to penetrate the region by making frequent tours.
