A group of youths from Nyamache sub-ounty has called upon all politicians from Kisii County to unite ahead of 2017 polls for the sake of the community.
Led by its chairman Wilson Mbaka at Rigena secondary school during a prayer meeting, Rigena Youth group challenged politicians from the region to bury their perceived political differences and form a formidable party that will help the region to have bargaining power come next general elections.
“If politicians from both Nyamira and Kisii Counties join hands to form one political party, then Kisii community will have a say in the competitive field of politics in our nation. This is the time to come together,” said Mbaka.
Chairman Mbaka said the community has lagged behind in developments because the political elites do not speak one voice during elections.
“We have a record of electing people from various political parties in national elections. Unlike other communities, we do not have our own party. This trend is dangerous if it persist and we still have a chance to rectify,” said Mbaka.
He claimed that some famous politicians have taken advantage of perceived disunity among Gusii politicians to take them for granted in national matters.
“The disunity amongst our local leaders has made it difficult for national leadership to take us serious in developmental issues. We must seize this opportunity and prove them wrong,” added Mbaka.
Gusii politics are dynamic hence it keeps on changing during national polls. In 2013, the community voted for Cord coalition unanimously. Most of its elected leaders were elected on ODM party ticket.
