Most passengers complain about annoying behavior being exhibited by matatu drivers and conductors such as feigning amnesia when it comes to their change and especially when they are handed ‘big’ notes or refusing to reduce the volume in case of loud music.
However, a time has come for some customers in Nakuru to be reminded that they also have annoying habits which ought to be done away with.
The following is a checklist of some of the most annoying habits that ought to be done away with;
1) Looking at other people’s phones
Some passengers in Nakuru have an annoying habit of making other people’s business their business. Once you start scrolling your phone, you will notice them looking keenly at what you are doing. Worst still, others will go ahead to make comments in case they see some of your photos.
2) Conversing loudly on mobile phones
While this might be hilarious especially when one lies as to where he or she is, this behaviour is among the most annoying ones that are displayed by passengers. Once some of them receive phone calls, they will go ahead to request the driver to reduce the volume of the music after which they talk loudly on their mobile phones. It does not matter whether an argument is going on or whether the person on the phone is busy flirting with another. This behaviour must be done away with. In this case, an SMS will always suffice so as not to create disturbance for other passengers who may be busy reading books, newspapers or those who require peace of mind.
3) Singing loudly to music being played in matatus
This is an absolute NO. This behaviour is mostly seen in young girls who tend to know every song being played. This is when they shout on top of their voices with some of them forming their own words to the lyrics being played never mind that they may go off key. Courtesy demands that you simply silently nod your head in case you are enjoying the music. In other cases, the songs may have unspeakable and unprintable words which the young ones may go ahead and shout, an act which may not auger well with the older generation.
4) Eating while travelling
Though one may feel the urge to do this, it is highly advisable to avoid doing so. This is because in most cases, passengers consume food that they have purchased from the road side and fast food restaurants without knowing how they have been handled. In case of food poisoning, the journey may be quite unpleasant to the rest of the passenger and also to the passengers in the matatu. On the other hand, the aroma from some foods may not be pleasant to all passengers and as a result, that journey may prove to be uncomfortable. If one must have something to eat, stick to snacks such as ice cream and soda, among other snacks that do not have any aroma. Some passengers also chew quite loudly which is very irritating.
5) Insistence by some passengers to converse with others
Some passengers have the annoying habit of talking to the people who are close to them regardless of whether they know you or not. The conversation may be initiated after they hear a song in a matatu or out of nowhere. This person may raise sentiments that you don’t necessarily agree with and especially passengers that are drunk. Some go ahead to hurl insults at you whereas others simply ask you questions that you don’t have an answer to.
