Haki Africa, a Mombasa based NGO has criticised the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) over failure to punish individuals propagating hate speech.Addressing journalists in Mombasa, Haki Africa executive director Hussein Khalid said NCIC has been around for a long time but the commission has not achieved anything tangible.Hemed said the Commission should be disbanded for failing to execute its mandate, adding that its responsibilities should be handed over to the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).Khalid said it is a shame that the Commission has never prosecuted any politician despite having adequate evidence.“We always see politicians making reckless utterances in public. Isn’t that evidence enough to lock them behind bars?” asked Khalid.Khalid said it was time for NCIC to be disbanded and allow the DPP to ensure those dividing Kenyans along tribal lines are prosecuted.“The commissioners take home hefty salaries and allowances which could be used to pay doctors, nurses and teachers but the money goes into waste since the commissioner has not achieved anything,” he added.He termed the arrest of Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria and Johnston Muthama a cosmetic show that was meant to be a public relations gimmick by the jubilee government.“How many times have we seen them being arrested? NCIC must be disbanded as it is simply a toothless dog,” he said.On his part, NCIC Commissioner Morris Dzoro said the Commission is trying its level best to contain hate speech in the country and unite Kenyans.
