A Coast-based human rights organization has threatened to take legal action against the National Police Service over brutality on University of Nairobi students.Addressing journalists at Seven Islands Resort in Watamu, Kilifi on Saturday, Haki Africa Executive Director Hussein Khalid condemned the excessive use of force by police officers and called on IPOA and KNCHR to investigate the matter thoroughly and take action against the officers involved.Khalid said scenes of students being frog matched, slapped and even stepped on by police officers was a sign of the degenerating state of human rights in the country."Excessive use of force is outlawed by the constitution of Kenya and the Prevention of Torture Act is prescribed in the constitution that was unanimously passed by Kenyans in 2010," said Khalid. His sentiments were reiterated by Dr Najya Mohamed and Abubakar Yusuf, a lawyer. On his party, Yusuf said the country is in a state of uncertainty as we head to the repeat presidential elections slated for October 26, adding that attacking young people in their institution of learning could further escalate the tension.
