A human rights lobby Haki Africa has established a special human rights department which will be fighting justice in court for locals in the Coast region and in Kisumu County.

Haki Africa Executive Director Hussein Khalid said that the department will have qualified lawyers who will be in charge of prosecuting all those who will deny locals their rights in anyway.

Speaking at the Haki Africa offices on Monday, Khalid said that the department will be in charge of conducting investigations in all the cases filed at the Haki Africa offices by locals, make follows ups and gather adequate evidence and file various cases in court so that locals get justice.

He revealed that with such efforts, many cases where locals are denied of their rights, evicted from their native land and facing gender based violence will be contained in the region.

According to Khalid, the organisation receives between three to five cases of gender based violence weekly figures that should worry any Coastal resident.

“We also have our gender and children’s rights officer Salma Hemed who will be in charge of fighting for the rights of women and children in the region, these cases are on the rise,” he said.

Khalid appealed to the security agents who work with the human rights organisation so that all culprits are arrested and charged so that the Coastal community gets justice.

“We have also established that land conflicts are on the rise in the region, in fact the Coast is facing very many land problems compared to other regions in the country,” he added.

Khalid said that this year, the human rights organisation is focusing more on using legal means and the judiciary to ensure that it fights for the rights of Kenyans and all those whom were deprived of their rights gets justice.
