Haki Africa has released a report reviewing human rights events of 2017.According to the report, out of the 16 Coast residents reported missing, 11 were victims of extrajudicial killings in counter-terrorism operations in the region. The report also revealed that four people were victims of enforced disappearances. However, one of the missing persons was later found. The report adds that many other cases were reported but their authenticity could not be verified."Although there are many other cases that Haki Africa heard, they were not included in the report as their authenticity or veracity could not be confirmed,” read the report in part. When reached for comment, Coast regional commander Larry King said he had not seen the report. He, however, said the eleven people who were killed were armed and wanted criminals.Listed in the report were Lamu-based Fareed Omar Awal, a wanted terror suspect and Fatma Mohamed whose bodies were found in Naivasha in April with strangulation marks and acid poured on them. They had been reported missing about one month before they were found dead.Others include Ibrahim Shee, Babu Mustafa Sheti and Juma Abdalla Musa who were shot dead by police on May 17. “Two other bodies of people shot by police were also lying at Coast General Hospital, bringing the total number of bodies to five," the report adds.According to the report, Mohamed Mwamuraji was killed on February 26 in Kwale by officers from the Anti-Terror unit and the Flying Squad. The report also notes that the victims’ families had been crying foul after their kin were arrested by police and later executed."The families cried foul alleging their kin were first arrested before being extrajudicially executed,” read the report in part.Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Mombasa County that you want Hivisasa to cover?
