Haki Africa, a human rights lobby group has said their search for Abubakar Abdulkadir, a Malindi resident who is reported to have been abducted by unknown people two weeks ago has proved futile. The NGOs head of programmes Francis Auma said they searched all the mortuaries in Kilifi, Mombasa and Taita Taveta counties but did not find Abdulkadir’s body.Speaking at the Haki Africa’s offices in Mombasa on Tuesday, Auma said it is unfortunate that cases of extrajudicial killings were resurfacing in the Coast region.Abdulkadir is reported to have been arrested by unknown people believed to be officers from the anti-terror police unit.Auma revealed that a total of 11 disappearances have been reported since September this year.“Abubakar Abdulkadir famously known as ‘Shebe’, a Malindi based-businessman was operating a hotel and a butchery within Malindi town. What could have happened for the suspected anti-terror officers to arrest and take him away,” asked Auma. The 56-year-old is said to be sickly and the family fears that he will die due to lack of medication.Auma said the latest case of forced disappearances in the region was that of Mohammed Ali Zingizi, who is said to have been whisked away by officers believed to be from the anti-terror unit on Friday in Likoni.“My husband was waylaid while from the mosque and when he tried to yell for help, police pointed guns at the crowd and warned locals not to interfere with the arrest. No doubt our police officers are behind this,” said Shebe’s wife, Amne Abdulkadir.Haki Africa Executive Director Hussein Khalid has asked the inspector general of police to issue a statement on police involvement in the enforced disappearances of Coast residents.Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir and his Likoni counterpart Mishi Mboko have condemned police, saying it is against the law to arrest innocent residents in the name of fighting terrorism.
