Human rights lobby Haki Africa will move to court to seek explanation from the Mombasa county assembly clerk Salim Juma over misuse of imprest fund meant for MCAs official duties expenses.
In a statement to newsrooms on Monday evening, Haki Africa’s Executive Director Hussein Khalid said that the former County assembly members could not account for Sh5 million given to them as imprest to enable them discharge official duties in their wards of representations.
According to Khalid, the County assembly clerk Mr. Salim Juma should explain to Mombasa residents how the Sh5 million meant for imprest was used and produce relevant documents to support his defense.
Khalid said that human rights body such as Haki Africa which is mandated to conduct social audit in various public organisation cannot remain mum as Mombasa County assembly carries on with embezzlement of funds.
Khalid said that apart from heading to the courts, the human rights body is also planning demonstrations and picket at the Mombasa county assembly buildings at treasury square until the clerk publicly reveals on how the money was used.
“We are not only pushing form the recovery of the 5 million shillings wasted by the former Member of the Mombasa County assembly but we also want their names made public and how much they swindled,” added Khalid.
He went on, “If we do not take community action now and stop misuse of public funds then it will be a norm for our members of the county assembly,”
Already Haki Africa is in legal process with its team of lawyers to sue the county assembly clerk Mr. Salim Juma.
