This comes following the killing of a chief and Nyumba Kumi officials in Lamu and Kwale counties respectively.

Human rights lobby group Haki Africa has called for improved security for administrators and Nyumba Kumi officials in the Coast region.

Haki Africa Executive Director Hussein Khalid said the region had recently experienced fatal attacks on chiefs, village elders and Nyumba Kumi officials.

Mr Khalid said the recent brutal attacks on chiefs and local leaders are terrifying residents in the region who depend on the chiefs and elders for their safety.

“It is worrying that administrators who are working hard to enhance security in their regions are targeted by attackers,” said Khalid.

“Instead of just offering lip service, the Interior Ministry should ensure it takes appropriate measures to offer better security to local security officials,” added Mr Khalid in a statement.

Last week, a chief in Lamu County and three Nyumba Kumi officials in Kwale County were shot dead by unknown assailants in two separate incidences.

Police officers have so far arrested six people in connection with the killing of the chief.
