Human rights body, Haki Africa, wants thorough investigations conducted over an incident where two police recruits died under unclear circumstances at the Kiganjo Police training Centre in Nairobi.
Haki Africa’s executive director, Hussein Khalid, said that Police should not use cover up means in ensuring that the ugly incident goes unearthed and investigated.
Khalid said that the reports on the death of the two recruits did not clearly state what transpired and eventually led to their death and he insisted that thorough investigations must be initiated immediately.
“We do not want a situation where one has to die while on raining to protect the public, if so then the whole curriculum must be revised and reviewed” he added.
Khalid said that the human rights lobby is very closely following up the matter to ensure that those involved face the full force of the law.
“Police rights are human rights, how high is the double decker bed that can lead to someone’s death? We went through boarding schools, we fell down from upper decker beds but we did not die” he said in a statement to newsrooms Monday evening.
The human rights defender in the Country, said that the incident may be a sign of gross human rights violation of the recruits who may be struggling to overcome such brutality from the institutes’ administration.
He said that Police in charge of the old Kiganjo police training centre must come out clear and issue a public statement on what led to the two deaths in the training institute.
According to Khalid, police claim that the first recruit fell from upper decker bed in the double decker bed and died while the second one lost his life while undergoing an early morning physical training at the Kiganjo police training centre, Nairobi.
