A book meant for use by journalists says deodorants can be used to deter aggressors in violent situations.

The book, Staying Safe, was published in 2014 as a protection guide for journalists in Kenya.

The book is divided into two parts: one is on a protocol which sets the framework for the safety guide and part two discusses in-depth the “practical and tested guidelines that journalists can and should adopt to secure their safety.”

These guidelines are based on a baseline survey conducted in December 2012 by Kenya Media Working Group where “more than 70 per cent of the respondents said they were dissatisfied with the level of safety and security measures in place within their media houses.

While covering demonstrations where one is likely to deal with tear gas and other irritants, it is advisable to carry a lemon that will ease skin burns, a wet towel to protect your face from tear gas and swimming goggles to protect the eyes from tear gas.

The book also advices women journalists to dress appropriately, work in groups of trusted colleagues and carry deodorant sprays as they can be used to deter aggressors.

“When riding on a bodaboda, avoid holding onto the rider for support and firmly warn him if he becomes too familiar. Place your bag in the space between both of you and avoid wearing a short skirt” the book advices.

Staying Safe is published with contributions from a number of organisations including Media Council of Kenya, Article 19, Kenya Media Programme, Committee on Protection of Journalists and National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders-Kenya.

In order for journalists to be able to plan effectively for their safety, the book provides knowledge and additional tips that will be of great help in their working environment.

Staying Safe also helps journalist understand the legal framework and discusses how to manage stress and keeping families safe from the journalist's work.

This book is a worth read by not only journalists but also the tips contained herein are useful to activists.
