Nyali MP Hezron Awiti has accused Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho of failing to utilise the resources provided by the county to improve the lives of residents.

Speaking during the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of Maweni Secondary School, Awiti said Joho has concentrated on popularising the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in various parts of the nation, in a bid to help the party's leader Raila Odinga ascend to power at the expense of his people.

The MP cited hawkers and mechanics who were rendered jobless after being evicted from Mvita.

“These are the very people the governor is trying to sweet talk to vote him back. Let him know that no amount of persuasion and hanging on the coat of Mr Odinga will guarantee him votes, because he has wasted the chances that the people of Mombasa gave him in 2013,” he said.

The outspoken legislature, also told Joho to forget the Luo vote as he looks forward to defending his seat in the next general election.

He said the Luo community in Mombasa will not support Joho’s gubernatorial bid despite his close relationship with Raila.

Awiti said Joho had done nothing for the Luo community residing in the coastal region, thus should not bank on their votes in 2017.

“How can he purport to be a friend to Raila and campaign for him yet he does not care about members of his (Raila’s) community in Mombasa? I am telling Joho to forget the Luo vote in this county,” said Awiti.

“Mr Joho has criss-crossed the country, popularising Mr Odinga but this has nothing to do with national politics but an attempt at trying to get the Luo votes in Mombasa to retain the governorship,” he added.
